Four types of hockey are played in North America: ice hockey, rink
hockey, field hockey, and in-line roller hockey. Each type of hockey
requires specialized equipment and protective gear.
Ice hockey is played on a smooth ice skating rink that is 200 feet long by
85 feet wide (NHL rinks) or 100 feet wide (Olympic rinks). Players
wear ice hockey skates plus an array of protective gear including a
helmet with a visor, a throat protector, and a protective cup, plus
gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, knee pads, and shin pads. They
use their hockey sticks to maneuver a hard black rubber hockey puck around
the rink, striving to shoot it into the opposing team's goal. Each
team's goaltender wears goaltender skates plus a helmet with mask, a
throat protector, a chest pad, a protective cup, arm pads, and leg pads,
plus a blocking pad for the stick hand and a catch glove for the free hand.
Rink hockey is played on a smooth, seamless roller skating rink that is
between 36 to 44 meters long and 18 to 22 meters wide, constructed
from wood, cement, asphalt, or plastic.
Players wear rink hockey skates, also known as quads,
as well as gloves, knee pads, shin guards and elbow pads.
Using their hockey sticks, they try to maneuver a lightweight plastic
ball into the opposing team's goal. Each team's goaltender
wears a helmet with face mask as well as padded gloves and leg pads.
In-line roller hockey is played on a smooth, seamless rink
between 40 to 61 meters long and 20 to 30 meters wide, constructed
from wood, cement, asphalt, or plastic.
Players wear in-line roller hockey skates plus a helmet with face mask,
a protective cup and gloves. Many players also wear shin guards,
elbow pads and protective pants.
Using their hockey sticks, players strive to shoot a hard rubber puck
into the opposing team's goal.
In-line roller hockey rules are similar to ice hockey rules.
Field hockey is played on a rectangular grass field that is 91.4 meters
long by 55 meters wide.
Players wear shin guards plus shoes with flexible plastic cleats.
They use their field hockey sticks to shoot a hard plastic ball
into the opposing team's goal. Each goalkeeper wears a helmet
with face guard, a body protector, elbow pads, leg pads, and kicker boots
plus a padded glove for the stick hand and a blocker glove
for the free hand.
Field hockey rules and play action are similar to those for soccer.
